Why work with our team inside a protected resort area?

We have been residing in Dominica for 18 months. During this time we have sourced and purchased the resort, hand built a local hard wood house and added a full service road. Set up rainwater harvesting and purification systems. It has not all been easy! We arrived here from a very successful 5-year rural beach community project in Oaxaca, Mexico. We have gained first hand experience through trial and error. So you don’t have to. We are here to help you realize your dream and secure your investment.

The Team

Manicou River Resort Ltd is a Dominican limited company. We are comprised of Dominican and British partners, cousins by marriage. We are dedicated to using locally manufactured products and local labor. We offer onsite training to local youth projects.

Why build on this site?

We felt that in order for our project to work we needed a very special location, one that encapsulated the essence of Dominica’s attraction worldwide. Tanetane has areas of unspoiled rain forest above, it has fantastic snorkeling/scuba sites, and it has wonderful trade wind breezes from the mountains, The Caribbean Sea, low population density, 2 beaches, low
Accommodation. It has Portsmouth; a major town, which has a great Creole, feel, with its wonderful food market, nightlife, shops, services and a friendly people who are in need of work.
In fact it’s proximity to Portsmouth our favorite town on Dominica was a deciding factor. Located here is The Ross University School of Medicine, part of DeVry University, which has over 1,600 students mainly from the United States and Canada. The presence is a major economic resource for the local people. The Picard area already does very well from its patronage, but we feel that Tanetane could also be very desirable to the professors (some who already live there) and the students. There is a need for another international, stylish restaurant bar. Eco accommodation is urgently needed for visiting faculty and family.

The Government of Dominica has completed the second phase of the Tanetane Sea Defense and Road Works Project Phase II and the rehabilitation of the St. Aroment Road. Valued in excess of $2.8 million.
We asked ourselves “what is it that we as home owners and tourists would want from a destination?” The answers were;
- A lush, natural setting
- Great sea and mountain views
- Fresh air, sea breezes
- Close proximity to amenities.
- Nature trails straight from door
- Close to major tourist attractions
- Ability to walk to nearest town
- Rural feel
- Beach feel
- Mountain feel without remoteness
- Ability to walk to bars and restaurants
- Safe, quite family neighborhood

Tanetane has all of these. One can be sat amongst the parrots in a lush setting and within minutes be swimming in the Caribbean Sea. An evening stroll to Lagoon to dance the night away at Big Papa’s reggae night. Perfect.
Also located very near is the Cabrits National Park, a beautiful example of a well-kept State garden. Besides the lush flora and interesting fauna, the park boasts Fort Shirley from the colonial era of the island. The walks amongst its ruins are serene and thought provoking.
Tanetane will be a force in Dominicans tourism in year to come.

  • Is there electricity?
Is there access for an elderly person or is it strenuous to get to the little homes? How much do you charge to stay there and if I were to purchase one is part of that price given to a different person who accepts the reservation? Please reply to my personal e-mail address, ameroons@gmail.com
    Many thanks.

  • There is electricity, but this is minimum to reduce the impact on the resort. We do not want to see electricity poles along the road. Batteries are sufficient with a mix of solar/wind/LPG Gas to recharge. There is WiFi available as an extra. We also use Blackberry as modem and have a good enough (100k) connection as a back up.

I would not recommend this to the elderly. Unless they are Dominican … they are little dynamos and can go on walking up hills until they are 100 years old.
The cottages are at present $95 US a night. This is a special opening season price and will be higher for next season. Real estate prices will go up accordingly.
