Five tips for living green: By Helen Cross of Simonseeks.com

Five tips for living green:

  • Eat local, fair trade and organic

Organic food is free of pesticides that can damage the environment and may also have health implications. However, any damage saved by buying organic is quickly cancelled out if your organic bananas have to be flown half way across the world before they arrive in your supermarket. Therefore, to be truly green, make sure that your food is as local, organic and fair trade as possible. Eating organic ensures that your food is as pure as possible, eating locally and seasonally reduces the pollution that is caused by the worldwide transport of food, and eating fair-trade ensures that the producers of  your food are paid a reasonable wage for their efforts.

  • Conserve water

Water is our most precious commodity, and is something that is becoming disturbingly scarce. The amount of water we have on earth is limited and ninety percent of it is salt water; which is not suitable for drinking. Cut down on the amount of water you use by not overfilling the kettle when you boil water, taking a shower instead of a bath, not leaving the tap running when you brush your teeth and think about collecting rain water.

  • Save on fuel

Fuel is one of the biggest contributors to environmental damage. Limit the amount of fuel you burn by using public transport where possible, sharing lifts, avoiding using cars for short journeys and not over revving in low gears.

  • Embrace the net

Many banks and phone companies now off the option of having paperless bills. Switching to paperless can make checking your finances quicker and easier and also saves valuable paper thus decreasing your carbon footprint.

  • Respect the natural balance

This is especially necessary if living in an area of biodiversity and natural beauty: at all times attempt to leave the land as it was when you came. That means no 4×4 journeys down rainforest tracks, no coral souvenirs taken from tropical reefs and no crisps or sweets fed to endemic animals: basically limit your human impact on the world as much as possible to avoid disturbing the delicate balance of the ecosystem and the life it sustains.

British Airways will introduce a new route to San Juan on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico next year.

The airline announced that it would operate twice-weekly flights to the destination from London Gatwick from 28 March.

BA will therefore offer a total of 64 weekly services to 15 destinations in the Caribbean, with connections to Barbados, Antigua, Jamaica and other islands also available.

Announcing the route during a visit to an event hosted by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, BA chief executive Willie Walsh said the carrier is committed to developing its presence in the region.

He added: ‘Our new joint business with American Airlines and Iberia, which we announced last week, also opens up a host of new opportunities and connections to the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St Maarten and the US Virgin Islands of St Croix and St Thomas.’

Travellers can visit San Juan to explore the only walled city in the Caribbean and see its famous fortresses or visit the duty-free shopping malls.

Manicou River Says …

How we understand this is … basically, BA will fly to San Juan and AA will add extra flights to it’s existing Caribbean schedule to connect with the international section. This is great news for Dominica.

Nobody knew about this on Dominica. It’s a total surprise.

Grandfather runs down Morne Diablotin summit in 35 minutes

Oct 11, 2010   //   by admin   //   Events  //  No Comments

We wull write this story with more detail and photos at a later date.

Grandfather Damien 55, from Savanne Paile, Tanetane climbed to the summit of Morne Diablotin 4400 ft with the manicou River team. He then RAN down it with his friend Charlie in 35 minutes.

We were there to witness the whole thing. We even have a photo of him running back down to Syndicate.

For Dominicans this will be a nice little story I am sure, but to us visitors this seems utterly amazing as we see ourselves as OLD by 50.

This just shows how the old style diet here is perfect and that any new diets such as McDonalds should be looked at as a backwards move not a forward one.
